Programme note on Travelling Back.

In 1997 I travelled overland through South East Asia. One gloomy grey Sunday morning I arrived in Yogyjakarta on the island of Java, Indonesia. After the surf, sun and fun of Bali, it felt as if I was entering an Eastern European City during the cold war. The streets were deserted and there was a lone truck reversing, and the sound of it reversing was unusually slow and sombre (in keeping with the mood of the city at that early hour) I began to sing the opening melody over the top of the truck reversing.

This melody evolves into other themes that I have been working on over the years. Travelling back is a series of little pieces quite obviously drawing on themes and styles from various periods in our known musical history.
